Adobe has announced that Flash Player support will end on December 31, 2020. Towards the end of this year, the makers of modern web browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and others will remove the ability to play Flash Player files in their browser. Read below for details on how this will impact your Jive community.
- Jive 9.0+ and Jive Cloud
Jive on-premise / hosted version 9.0+ and Jive Cloud does not contain any dependencies that require Flash Player to be enabled in web browsers in order for users to view video content or use other features available to your Jive community.
Presently, Jive utilizes a video hosting service from Twistage to assist with the upload, encoding, and viewing of videos. Twistage have confirmed that disabling flash in your web browser will not impact Jive video functionality, with one small exception, detailed below:
If Flash Player is disabled in the Web Browser
If Flash Player is disabled, the browser will attempt to play video content with the built-in HTML5 player.
If the content is in Flash Format (FLV or any FV4 codec), then the browser will prompt to download the file to the user's computer, which you can then play locally using a tool like the Flash Player projector content debugger.
When creating a new video in your Jive community, the Record via Webcam option is not shown. (Options to upload or embed are still available.)
If Flash Player is enabled in the Web Browser
If Flash Player is enabled, the web browser may use the built-in Flash Player or HTML5 player to play the video content, depending on the format.
